Job Description
Job Title:                           Assistant Controller
Job Classification:           Full-time

Job Summary
The Assistant Controller will work directly with the Controller to ensure the monitoring and proper recordation of UGC’s assets.  This position will also ensure internal control compliance and accounting compliance within generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).  The Assistant Controller is also responsible for the management and support of the Financial Accounting Team, providing guidance and training in accounting principles within the application of GAAP standards.  The Assistant Controller should have a thorough understanding of GAAP technical principles and reporting requirements.  The Assistant Controller must have a thorough understanding of internal control standards, with the ability to assess and provide recommendations to the Controller and CFO.  The position is integral in the management and delivery of corporate projects as required with the ability to lead and direct project teams.  Self-direction with the ability to multi-task, with a focus on continual improvement, is essential. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead and support accounting functions of UGC’s financial accounting team.  Ability to coach and train GAAP accounting principles.
  2. Lead UGC’s accounting team in cross training and backup support systems for job functions.
  3. Manage monthly and quarterly financial close process.  Review various monthly accounting reconciliations; provide feedback and training to accounting team. 
  4. Ability to prepare and present accurate financial accounting journal entries to Controller, including payroll entries.
  5. Prepare monthly/quarterly financial statements, ensuring integrity of the financial statement presentation.
  6. Develop and provide adhoc reports and analysis to Controller, CFO and CEO as required.
  7. Ability to learn and master UGC’s transaction cycles, work with the Controller to recommend changes in any identified control deficiencies.
  8. Learn and master UGC’s mark to market commodity accounting, metrics and transactional processes; Master commodity accounting and position swing, working directly with Controller and CFO as needed.
  9. Work directly with UGC’s external CPA firm during annual audit.  Ability to answer any questions, substantiate audit evidence to support workpaper balances.  Coordinate with Controller/CFO as needed.
  10. Utilize technology to gain and drive organizational process efficiencies.  Recommend to Controller and CFO ideas for improvements.
  11. Ability to lead project teams; Plan for projects, assign and lead to completion.
  12. Interact directly with all levels of the UGC organization.  Ability to collaborate and a desire to inquire with questions/requirements as needed. 
  13. Assist CFO and Controller in the annual budget and forecasting requirements.
  14. Serve as back-up for payroll, cash management, futures and daily options activity.
  15. Communicate with co-workers, management, clients, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
  16. Encourages an environment which fosters teamwork and continuous improvement.
  17. Other duties as assigned.
     
Required Education and Experience
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required, but equivalent work experience and education will be considered. 
  2. Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in the management of accounting functions, CPA preferred.
  3. Proven and effective interpersonal skills; must support a team-oriented approach within the department as well as for the Company.
  4. Independent, self-starter with the ability to multi-task.
  5. Ability to work with the Microsoft suite of products and various ERP systems.

Physical Demands and Requirements
  • Must be computer literate with proven ability in the use of spreadsheets, database, and word processing software applications within a Windows-based operating environment. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to assess risk, and exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
  • Remain in a seated position for 8-hours per day. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas in English by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to customers, public, and convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
